We received this message on WhatsApp in the “Crossing the World” group on 24\/6\/2021.
\nThe most important thing is that everyone is healthy and intact, but there is no doubt that in times of distress the right decisions are the key to preserving human life.
\nWe wish Yossi Avronin and the crew quick care of the boat and lots of water under the keel.
\nWe were on our way from Honduras to Panama, hard sea, 25+ knots wind, against the waves and the wind, washing machine. On the third day of sailing in front of Nicaragua in the morning when we were all sitting in Cook Pete, the “Spray-hood closed”, their cargo ship came from the side and hit our rear structure and completely dismantled it. We then saw that cross 1 in the mast was broken and the mast was crooked.While we were recovering and assessing the damage we released the manor lift to support the mast due to the damaged rear Honda.
\nAfter a few minutes the mast with the sails fell into the sea.
\nHaving no choice, we cut the hunts and all the cables and wires with a disk saw and released the mast and sailsthe depths of the sea.
\nIn assessing the condition and fuel inventory we decided to head back to Guatemala to Rio Dulce where there is a large and sophisticated marina and there is also a hurricane hideout.
\nOf course all crossing plans are canceled, who knows, maybe forever or just postponed for a year.
\nThe main thing is that we are all whole and healthy, if the encounter had been a second or two earlier, their snare would have crossed the boat and probably hurt Yossi and Zvika who were sitting on the side that was hit.
