General
The Skippers course in Greece is the flagship (no more appropriate expression !!) of the Sea Time Club. It centralizes all the principles that have guided us since the establishment of the club: a perfect combination of fun and learning to sail.
Let’s start with the punch line: within a week, even without any experience or maritime background, you will learn to be a skipper and you will receive an international certification that will allow you to rent a yacht abroad. The certificate is issued by one of the world’s leading sailing organizations: International Yacht Training, which we represent in Israel .
And now for the cherry: the study takes place within a week on a yacht in the Greek islands, a piece of paradise that turns the course into a dream vacation and an unforgettable experience.
The course is intended for anyone who has ever dreamed of becoming a skipper with the aim of sailing a yacht abroad, without going through the complex route of obtaining an Israeli license (sailing 30). On the other hand, the course will be a very serious springboard for skippers There is a very large overlap in issues.
To this end, the Sea-Time Club has developed a revolutionary and innovative concept: a skipper course in Greece.
Course date
The courses are held every year in April-October, you can join one of the pre-arranged dates or a private date if you have a group of students.
Purpose of the Skippers Course in Greece
Impart within a week, both the practical and theoretical knowledge, and the skills needed to sail a sailing yacht on a coastal cruise.
But the real goal is to discover the sea and enjoy it, we do not give up on any of our courses …
Skipper Course Structure in Greece
In preparation for a course abroad, 3 two-hour sessions are held in Israel, in which basic interpretive principles are learned on the club’s 7-meter boats in the Tel Aviv marina. (A bonus is hidden here that you will discover later …)
The course itself lasts about a week and takes place in the Greek islands, on a sailing yacht.
(The course can also be held in Israel, while building a personal program for each student, but much more fun in Greece …)
In order to give each student maximum attention and practice time, the groups include a maximum of 5 students (the course can also be held for smaller groups)
The courses in Greece are held in the months of May-June and September-October, the courses in the country are held all year round.
Course / Module content:
Meet in Athens, shop (lots of beer, ouzo, feta cheese and Kalamata olives are recommended) and learn the process of getting the yacht from the rental company and how to get acquainted with a new yacht. Already the same day or the next morning go out towards the Saronic Islands.
Each day anchor on an island, bay or other fishing village (the route is determined according to the conditions or fantasy of the skipper on duty and the crew that day). We will discover a new place, new people, taverns and Greek delicacies.
Theoretical and practical study combined while maintaining professionalism, but without forgetting that we travel in heaven and we also came to enjoy.
The emphasis throughout the course is on training each student and bringing him to a level where he can rent and sail a yacht alone abroad with family or with friends.
Since we are on vacation, we do not miss interesting sites along the way, such as a visit to the amphitheater in Epidhavros, which has the best acoustics in the world or a jump to Leonard Cohen’s house in Hydra, a magical island without vehicles and getting on top of …. donkeys.
Course Content
The theoretical part:
Each student will receive a professional, in-depth and invested booklet that includes all the required theoretical material that is presented in a clear and structured manner. Learning material:
Navigation – knowledge of the yacht, rules of the road, basic concepts, mooring, ropes, cases and reactions.
Machine – knowledge of the engine, fault operation, types of pumps, engine assemblies.
Device navigation – Familiarity with the various electronic navigation devices on the yacht.
Coastal navigation – knowledge of the sea map, finding a location at sea, navigation and route planning.
About two to three weeks after we return to Israel from Greece, each student will be asked to take an online theoretical test that includes the theoretical material studied. All material is in the textbook and each student will additionally receive practice tests to prepare well.
The practical part:
It is important to emphasize and mention that unlike another sailing course, the practical study is actually done 24 hours a day with a close guide, since also topics such as connection to electricity or running water in the marina, how to operate a dinghy in the bay at night, are topics that will be learned and are not included in a regular sailing course. In Israel. Each day, another student serves as a skipper on duty and is responsible for all of the actions required of the position. The “classic” topics that will be studied are:
Sailing with sails
Maneuvering the yacht in the marina using an engine
anchorage
Coastal navigation and device navigation
Route selection
In order to meet the practical requirements of the course, each student has to perform a number of assignments during the week and will be able to track their performance with the help of a detailed checklist which he will receive at the beginning of the course.
Certificates and licenses
After meeting all the course requirements, theoretical and practical, you will receive two certificates from the IYT Sailing Association:

And now for the surprise we promised earlier: after completing the course, students who join the club will be able to sail alone, unaccompanied by a guide, with family or friends, on one of our 7 meter Benetteau 21 yachts!
In addition, as club members, graduates of the Skipper Course in Greece will be able to participate in all club activities (member cruises and hypothesis cruises) on all types and sizes of yachts! (Mono-God and Catamaran).
